When we taped this episode it was a week or so prior to the Black Thought delivering the freestyle performance of decade and the passing of Combat Jack Reggie Osse. On the first Black Thought speaks for himself, but I feel his performance shortly affirms my point of view. On the great Combat Jack I just wanted to send our respects to his family and friends. I was a fan of his work and looked forward to the day that maybe I could have him sit with me for a discussion about his life and his perspectives on manhood. Condolences and respects to all who knew him and thank you for what you did for the culture Combat.

In this episode I sit down with Jamaal Green. I met Jamaal via the listener community surrounding the Morning Jones Radio Show a few years back. While listening one day Bomani gave a shout out to Jamaal’s pending move to the Rose City for graduate school. Being a Portland transplant myself I went to the twitter machine and extended a welcome to the city offer. Portland is a solid town, but it can be quite the culture shock depending on your history. I figured the least I could do is extend a hand to the brother. Over the years we have connected around our shared interests in cities, black people, public policy and being curious about the world in general. We got into the weeds on a few interesting topics including honesty in relationships, black twitter, and martial arts movies. A few good reads came up in the conversation, which can be found below. Refuge and Reflection

Refuge is a place where one can be safe and rest. This episode is a gathering of my thoughts during my week at the Knoll Farm Better Selves Fellowship. I had a great week, learned a lot, and met some great people. The fellowship was an opportunity to work on a project of my own choosing without having to manage the day to day needs of  my regular life. I wrote, told stories, listened to others and tried my best to let the week happen. Being Black and having nothing to do is still de facto illegal many places in the United States. The reality of having the run of my day without the need to prepare my meals, check my phone, tend to my children and such while trying to lock in on a few of my works was inspiring. Thank you to all the folks at Knoll Farm for providing a space to reflect. Please enjoy. Peace
