Emory Douglas was the Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party. Through archival footage and conversations with Emory we share his story, alongside the rise and fall of the Panthers. He used his art as a weapon in the Black Panther Party’s struggle for civil rights and today Emory continues to give a voice to the voiceless. Word To The Wise…

As we move into the end of tax season, let me share a lesson. Pay your fare. In the last few months my family has experienced a series of small bumps in the road. Car damage, home repair, health and fitness matters. All small things that would be much worse if we did not have our affairs in order. It is not that we are perfect or in the optimal position I want to be. We were prepared. We did things the way that makes sense and have not heaped risk on risk for the sake of temporary gain. My advice to you is to pay your fare. Pay for insurance on your car, your home, your apartment, and your life. Get appropriate coverage and support services. Ask questions about your tools, how they work, what are the limits, and how to you access it. Get it right and pay your fare.

In honor of my recent travel to the city of Chicago, learn a little something about one of the greats in Black politics.

Mayor Harold Washington - Chicago's 41st Mayor Harold Washington, (born April 15, 1922, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.-died November 25, 1987, Chicago), American politician who gained national prominence as the first African American mayor of Chicago (1983-87). During World War II, Washington joined the army and served as an engineer in the South Pacific.

History Video of the Week:

Do the people that live, work, and visit Chicago know who founded Chicago? Do the people standing right next to his statue know that? Take to the streets with Jahmal Cole as he educates the city on John Baptiste du Sable, the founder of the windy city.

A Message Before You Go:

The city of Chicago has a lot of stories to tell. It should not be overlooked or undervalued in your study fo the Black story of this country. I have had to fortune to connect with the city in the last two years and I look forward to spending more time there in the future. This weekend I spent time connecting with my brother’s over few days. The maintenance of your relationships is highly important. We can take for granted that the ones we love, including our friends, are static objects. Locked in at that time we met and remaining how we remember them forever. The truth is that the world and everything in it is moving, growing, and changing. We have to be intentional and present in our relationships. Nothing matters more. As a man you do not exist on an island formed of just your personal identity. We are a piece of the whole. Be great, be righteous, and be with your brothers.

Farming is a viable business venture for those with a plan and vision to market. Black people have been intentionally pushed out of farming to benefit white people. We cannot build a viable foundation without access and control of food. Please view and share your thoughts.

Black farmers once made up 14 percent of America's farmers. Today, black farmers account for less than 2 percent. One of them, fourth-generation sugar cane farmer Wenceslaus 'June' Provost Jr., is fighting to maintain his family's farming legacy. June and his family were once part of the 1999 Pigford lawsuit, a massive class-action suit brought against the USDA alleging discriminatory practices.
Slavery left a bad taste in most African-Americans' mouth when it comes to farming. But as Will Scott points out, when we eat together, we don't fight. This nation needs more small farmers, more people growing food in general - black and white.

An Instagram feed you should be following:

Why Does Representation Matter? Recently I have seen a lot of discussion around representation and people struggling to understand or articulate why it's important. Why does it matter how people and ideas are shown in film, photography, and the news? Aren't there more pressing on the ground needs that we should focus on instead? Since this account is about changing representations of land, I wanted to address it here. Representation matters because it creates the ideological conditions necessary for realizing on the ground change. Basically, the more we talk about something in a certain way, the more we hear it and see it represented in a certain way, the more likely we are to accept it as true, as natural, or as "common sense" regardless of it's actual basis in truth. This is what psychologists call the Illusory Truth Effect - the tendency to believe information to be correct because of exposure rather than reason or evidence. This kind of ingrained belief especially across whole groups of people and cultures leads to what is called reification - or making REAL something that previously had only been imagined or talked about. In other words, we try to shape physical reality to fit our believes rather than allowing our beliefs to be shaped by truth. (Example of this is comments. My original post was too long.) - Once established, these realities are easy to perpetuate and incredibly difficult to destabilize. (Especially when, like wilderness, they intersect with entrenched power structures like colonialism and capitalism). But the whole idea behind Indigenous Geotags is that this process can go the other way, that representing these lands as deeply cultural and historical, as belonging to indigenous people, is the first step toward creating a more just reality.
