Videos of the Week:
Farming is a viable business venture for those with a plan and vision to market. Black people have been intentionally pushed out of farming to benefit white people. We cannot build a viable foundation without access and control of food. Please view and share your thoughts.
Black farmers once made up 14 percent of America's farmers. Today, black farmers account for less than 2 percent. One of them, fourth-generation sugar cane farmer Wenceslaus 'June' Provost Jr., is fighting to maintain his family's farming legacy. June and his family were once part of the 1999 Pigford lawsuit, a massive class-action suit brought against the USDA alleging discriminatory practices.
Slavery left a bad taste in most African-Americans' mouth when it comes to farming. But as Will Scott points out, when we eat together, we don't fight. This nation needs more small farmers, more people growing food in general - black and white.
