Show Notes: My Brother Jinho

On this episode of The Ask Your Oldhead Podcast we sit down with my good brother Jinho Ferreira. International recording artist, actor, writer and family to me, Jinho is an amazing creative person. We have been trying to record this interview for two years almost. It is a long story that I will not reveal today, but believe me this is special. We talk writing, rapping, and the paths we walk to finding our gifts. I look forward to having Jinho back later this year to get an update. Thank you Jinho for sitting with me and thank you for listening. Peace

Show Notes: Black History Month

This episode is a short drop on Black History Month. Why it exists and why it is important. I did two talks this month in the community about the value and importance of Black History month specifically. The study of history is always a valuable pursuit, so I was happy I had the opportunity to share my thoughts. I may share the audio from one of the talks when I get the sound in the near future. I am setting the stage for the coming episodes, so bare with me. A lot has been going on for me professionally that has cut into my production time, but I will be bringing it all to front in the near future. Please listen and add on if you feel the urge. Peace

Show Notes: Brotherhood

Brotherhood is an important topic for me. This is an opening foray into this topic. It will return in many forms in the future. This meditation is about brotherhood and its importance in what standards we set for ourselves. In my experience me will rise or fall to the collective standard of the men they spend the most time with. They will calibrate their behavior to fit the norms of that group. Due to this it is very important to develop a great cohort of men especially as you move from adolescent to young adult. The value does not end there, but it is the time frame I had in mind when I was crafting this piece. Enjoy.

Peace

Show Notes: Thoughts On Creativity at XOXOfest 2016

In September I was had the opportunity to attend the XOXOfest 2016, right here in Portland, Oregon. XOXO is an experimental festival celebrating independent artists who work on the internet. At the festival I was able to record this show in the Streampdx recording studio. The studio is built inside of a converted Airstream trailer and placed on the common at the festival. The goal is to create a podcast recording studio that is open to the community; providing a space to record and learn for everyone. I took this moment to record some thoughts on my own experience with creative endeavors and my experience at the festival itself. Thank you to the StreamPDX crew (especially @tyeshasnow & @aaronpk) and the everyone at XOXO that opened the door for me to attend.

Thoughts:

  • The whole time I attended this event I felt like I showed up to meeting of folks that work in an entirely different world than me. Although I do this podcast the majority of my works are with people in person in this city. I got the feeling that I was one of the few people there who's day job was social service related.
  • I played a game with a playstation wand that I won due to my elite elusiveness for a man my size. It was crazy fun, involved some kind of chamber music, and tapping other people's controllers. It was really dope and I would be happy to play it again.
  • I met some interesting people, but did not get the time to develop any depth to those new relations. Since this was the last one I will have to do some leg work to reconnect with the people I had to pleasure of meeting.
  • Board and Table games can get really weird, but remain fun. I played several during the game night. Burgle Bros. and Illimat being the most fun. I encourage you to pick them both up.
  • I found out about a lot of cool video stuff, website stuff, game stuff, folks merchandising random stuff, eating stuff, and generally stuff that was stuff. I mean that sincerely.
  • The speakers were really cool. I got a little inspiration, a little motivation, and a little clarity  around expectations. Doing this thing here has been challenging to keep going and having an idea of what I think success looks like for me at this moment.
  • In hindsight I don't know if I maximized my promotion opportunities, but this project was not in position to be promoted anyway at the time. Smh
  • I walked around the a lot and that was cool. Nice roof top bar above Revolution Hall.
  • It still bothers me a little that I have lived in Portland the entire time this event was happening and never once heard about it. I never heard someone else more closely aligned to the tech world bring it up, never saw a flyer, a banner ad, or really anything about it. To that says this was a real inside baseball kind of tech event. Good for those in the loop, but not so much for expanding the attendees. I would have been happy to come to this last year when I was making my first recordings and figure podcasting out. Seems like lost opportunities here as well.
  • I really did enjoy myself. I met new people and would be happy to be apart of a future event if one comes to be.

Show Notes: My Brother Majestic

This is the first time I sat down with my brother I Majestic about a year ago during our travel to Venice Beach. Majestic has been my ace since day one and he will be back around for future discussions on a wide range of topics. I love him dearly and would not be who I am with out him. Some things to think about from our conversation (listen first then read the rest):

  • Shared Expectations - before you get all up in your feelings about outcomes in your life and relationships ask yourself, were we on the same page? Did we ever talk about what we want and who we are?

  • Travel - Get out of your space and see some other shores. We used to travel five deep in a rental on twenty-four to forty-eight hour power trips and see it all. We travel together and we travel alone, but you got to get on the move. Love where your from, but don't act like the rest of the world is not happening out there.

  • Family - understanding family and what it means, who is apart of it, and how to actually be family is not to be taken for granted.

  • Ethics - Do you operate in a way that anyone can be proud of you? Can we reestablish a culture that praises the ethical person? What are you ethics? Do you adhere to them and why? All things for you to explore.

  • Nothing to sale on the exit for this one, but keep your eyes peeled for future opportunities to support.

Peace

Show Notes: My Oldhead

We are nothing without the people that we love. Zyhier is one of my big brothers and an important part my story. Everyone that I interview for the show will not be as close to me as he is,  so please tread with respect if you take issue with anything that comes up in our dialogue. Live, learn, teach. Peace

Show Notes: A Legacy of Competence

In this inaugural episode of the Ask Your Oldhead Podcast, I discuss one of the underlying concepts that inspired me to start this project. The transmission of a legacy of competence is vital to ones personal growth and finding a place for themselves in the world. I am a stand up dude. I feel confident putting that in print. Who I am is a result of those I have had in my life to show me the way and the choices I have made. It is culture. External factors impact our lives and guide many of our choices. Culture responds to those forces equipping us to adapt to world and sustain our sense of self. That is why I started with this episode. Please add on with your thoughts on twitter at @askyouroldhead.  Peace
